Design by Christian Kerez | Total area: 42,500 m²
Scattered throughout the historic old town of Muharraq, these four car parks—designed by renowned architect Christian Kerez—are anything but ordinary.
Each structure features post-tensioned raft and suspended slabs, requiring meticulous tendon profiling to accommodate the complex slab geometries. Concrete-filled steel columns are anchored to the slabs via 32 mm-thick embedded steel plates, providing full structural fixity and enhancing punching shear resistance.
Adding to the visual drama are the ‘floating’ concrete spiral staircases, which ascend to four levels without internal supports—an elegant expression of both structural ingenuity and architectural intent.
With distinctive finishes and bold forms integrated into a heritage-rich urban fabric, this was a truly unique and rewarding project to deliver.
